Kerewan Area Council recently presented D895,000 to 16 ward development committees, institutions and associations to enhance ward development programmes and by extension support other institutions and organization to enhance their service delivery.
Seedy Touray, Chief Executive Officer of Kerewan Area Council, underscored the council commitment to support and complement development needs of ward development committees. He said the presentation of cheques to Ward Development Committees was part of council’s plan of activities, to plough back 60% to development work of taxpayers, adding that the fund will be monitored to ensure effective utilization.
Lamin Ceesay, Chairman of Kerewan Area Council, lauded the sound financial discipline and foresight of the council to enhance development efforts of taxpayers, while calling on ward councillors to invest the money into development projects and programmes in the ward.
Chairman Ceesay said transparency and accountability of funds would build trust between elected councillors and taxpayers.
Abdoulie Khan, Director of Finance, while thanking the taxpayers for their support and cooperation, renewed calls for communities and institutions to make timely payment of rate and tax, saying that it would enable council to embark on more development projects and programmes to bring about sustainable development.
The beneficiary institutions included FANDEMA Support Society, which received D20,000, GOVI D20,000, GADHOH D20,000, Regional Physical Challenge D20,000 and Ndey Gaye Ngorr Skills Training D15,000, and D800,000 was presented to 16 ward development committees.
