Landing Jammeh defends his crown as the national kickboxing champion on Sunday after beating a 67kg fighter Babucarr Bobb17-9-0.
Two of the heavyweights most talked about fighters squared off at the B.O. Semega Janneh hall of Serrekunda East.
Landing pined Sundiata Keita in the maiden edition last year and his solitary win in that period came off of a first round win over Sundiata 34-9-1-1 who is seemingly in the twilight years of his career.
However, no doubt Babucarr Bobb is still a strong threat in the heavyweight division in the country and he is still ranked among the best fighters despite losing on Sunday.
The championship organised by the Gambia Muay Thai Association and meant to select fighters for the national team, was attended by senior officials of national associations notably Taekwondo and Karate.
Giving his opening remarks, the commissioner of the Gambia Muay Thai Kickboxing Association, Ebrima Dembo Tamba, expressed delight at the way the event was organised.
“I’m very happy with the level of organization and the turnout is impressive,” he said.
Tamba cited the importance of the championship, saying it availed the fighters the chance to showcase their skills.
Since the inception of the Association in 2012 by a retired Gambian fighter based in the US, Bakary Sisoho, the association has trained more than six referees and coaches on the rules of the game, Tamba said.
He further said that his executive members are planning to visit the regions with the sole aim of decentralizing the game.
Kickboxing is a new game in The Gambia, but we are glad that success is being recorded, he said.
The only female fight of the night involved Binta Njie and Sofie Jarju. Binta won 9-4-0.
