Kanifing Municipal Disaster Management coordinator Binta Sey Jadama has told this paper that one unidentified girl believed to be 13 years of age drowned inside the drainage system near Churchill’s town Elton station and died on the spot.
The incident happened on Saturday at 11am during the heavy downpour of rain that day, she said, adding that after the girl’s body was found, the Fire and Ambulance Services took it to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul.
Up to the time of going to press, the home and family members of the deceased could not be traced or established by people in the area where the incident occurred, nor the authorities. The body is therefore lying at the RVTH mortuary for identification purposes.
In a related development, an eight-year-old boy Zeal Jatta of Tallinding was killed by the shock of a current from an electricity wire that cut and fell on him while he was with his mother inside their kitchen at around 11am on Saturday.
Ms Jadama, who also confirmed the incident, told this paper that by the time of the incident Zeal Jatta’s mother was making soda soap in their kitchen.
The mother was also briefly hospitalised and discharged the same day.
