A heavy downpour yesterday caused serious damage in Gunjur-Kanilai in the Kombo South District of the Western Region of The Gambia.
According to one Mafoday Dampha, a victim of the storm, who spoke to this reporter, the family was in the house, and to their surprise they saw themselves under a roofless building.
"It was a very terrifying experience for my family, when we saw ourselves under a roofless house. The heavy rainfall came with a severe wind, which blew off our roof, and collapsed some parts of the house.
"As I am talking to you now, I and my family are homeless, because we cannot sleep under this roofless building. And five of our children, including my neighbour, are seriously wounded and one is already hospitalised at Gunjur Health Center," he said.
The 64-year-old Dampha said he was not around when this unfortunate incident happened, but said it has caused much damage to his family.
"My foodstuff was destroyed. My TV set was also damaged, together with three beds, a cupboard, some jewellery and clothing. Definitely, I am in trouble. Everything we have is destroyed. I am a teacher by profession, and so I cannot afford to settle down, as quickly as possible," he stated.
Still speaking on behalf of his neighbour, who was also not around at the time of the incident, he said his neighbour is equally frustrated because of the damage caused by the rain.
Dampha appealed to the government through the National Disaster Management Agency, individual philanthropists and NGOs to come to their aid.
The same appeal was made by one Siaka Barrow, an eyewitness and neighbour, who divulged the information to The Point.
