Gunjur
on Friday beat Banjul by two goals to one in a well-contested final game played
at the Independence Stadium in Bakau to clinch their first-ever Super Nawettan
title.
Gunjur
lost to Banjul one nil in their group game prior to their Friday crunch clash.
Banjul
made a fascinating start to the game and won the lion’s share of ball
possession and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities.
Banjul
opened the score through right back Essa Jallow in the 18th minute of the game
from a penalty spot after a Banjul player was brought down inside the eighteen
by Gunjur defender Jerreh Bojang. The penalty gave the city boys the lead.
Gunjur
responded back for an equalizer and
levelled the score through midfielder Salifu Bojang aka Bapa in the 36th minute
of the game from an astonishing long-range shot to cancel Essa Jallow’s
18th-minute opener, thus first half ended one all.
Upon
resumption of the game, Gunjur regrouped themselves and mounted pressure on
Banjul defence line.
Malang
Jassey aka Uncle snatched the winner for Gunjur in the dying minute of the game
to earn South boys their first-ever Super Nawettan crown.
As
champions, Gunjur were awarded with a giant trophy and cash prize of D75,000;
whilst Banjul received D50,000 as the runners-up.
The
2016 Super Nawettan was sponsored by FiBank Gambia Limited.
