Gov’t warns against corruption, following missing containers at GPA

Feb 27, 2012, 11:56 AM

The Government Friday announced a major cleansing exercise at the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) affecting security officers guarding and securing the port of Banjul.

A media release from the Office of the President said that containers have been disappearing or being tampered with at the Gambia Ports Authority for some time now, under the watchful eyes of the security men and women.

“This dereliction of duty could not and will not be tolerated anymore, and the ongoing exercise serves as a warning to those left working at the GPA, and all other institutions in the country, that it will no longer be business as usual,” the release stated.

The release also reminded Gambians of a meeting President Yahya Jammeh had with the security service chiefs in April last year, during which President Jammeh deplored the unsavoury attitude of some of the officers, which the dispatch stated is tantamount to corruption.

It warned all those who are to enforce the law and protect lives and property to desist from corruption or otherwise face the consequences.

Noting that there will be zero tolerance for dishonesty and corruption of all its forms, the Office of the President urged people to take their responsibilities seriously wherever they are by putting nation before self.

“This country is ours and together we can make it the best in the whole world,” the release concluded.
