The Gambia Federation of the Disable (GFD) on Tuesday 2nd December 2009, held a press conference for local journalists at its office located at the Kanifing Community Centre.

The press briefing was part of preparations for the World Disable Day celebration, which GFD planned to observe in Banjul today December 3rd 2009.

Speaking at the conference, the Chairperson of the Gambia Federation of the Disable, Mr. Muhammed Kora said the federation was founded in 1991, with the aims and objectives of improving, developing and promoting the welfare of people with disabilities in The Gambia.

He pointed out that the federation has registered some significant achievements and experienced some difficulties in the past years.

He seized the opportunity to call on Commonwealth countries to come together and form a Commonwealth Trust that would address the affairs of people with disabilities in their respective countries.

He appealed to President Jammeh to also nominate them to the National Assembly so that they can contribute their quota to the development of the country.

Kora also appealed to NGOs, donors and philanthropists to support his federation so that they can attain their objectives.

For his part, the Public Relations Officer of the federation, Mr. Ebrima Dibbasey stated that this year's World Disable Day celebration would be done in a grand style.

Dibbasy called on the public to come out in their large numbers to celebrate the day.
