The Gambia Football Association First Division League which has witnessed significant improvements in terms of producing young talents over the years would kick-off with a traditional curtain-raiser when the last year's League champions Armed Forces meet the FA cup title holders Young Africans that took everyone, including the Head Coach Omar Joof by surprise after putting in a spectacular performance to become the FA cup winners after denying Gamtel the title in the super cup final last year.
The super cup final which is expected to start on 18th of next month will eventually pave way for the much-anticipated GFA Division One League Championship, the county's top flight football.
After some frustrating display two seasons ago, GPA will return to the top flight football hoping to avoid further embarrassment as the Ferry Boys look set to kick-off the campaign with a game against Samger that have proven to be a household name in the country's top flight football over the past few years when the two sides meet on Saturday 18th December, 2009, at the Serrekunda West Mini-Stadium.
City Boys Hawks and Bakau United will travel to Serrekunda East-Mini-Stadium in what could be described as a nail-biting encounter on the same day, while the last game on Saturday is also expected to witness another tied encounter when Brikama United play host to Interior at the box Bar-Mini-Stadium.
Former champions Wallidan and the Hotel Club Sea View will both travel to face each other at the Serrekunda East-Mini-Stadium on Sunday with something to be optimistic about. There will be another league game on Sunday between the 2006 league champions Real De Banjul and the Bakau Giants Steve Biko when the two top sides entertain each other at the Serekunda-West-Mini-Stadium. Gamtel would be involved in one of the toughest games of the season with a game against Armed Forces, the champions of last year and they might be one of the real title contenders when the championship kicks-off once again.
Meanwhile, other fixtures in the championship are as follows on Wednesday 23rd December, Hawks vs Steve Biko at the Stadium, Samger will lock horns with Wallidan at the Serrekunda-West-Mini-Stadium, Bakau United will meet Interior and Real De Banjul are set to take on Sea View.
