Seedy Kinteh, president of the Gambia Football Association (GFA) has once again been honoured with another leadership role following his inclusion into the seven-man newly confirmed interim Executive Committee of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) during its Extraordinary General Assembly held in Banjul at the weekend.

Member countries of the West Africa football body on Saturday converged at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

The main highlights of the meeting should have been the election of new Wafu executive but due to a recommendation from CAF to postpone the elections until the former carries out a proposed review of the organization of all zonal unions in Africa, the West Africa Football Union unanimously agreed not to go on with the elections.

In lieu of the postponed elections, Wafu decided to suspend the current executive committee, which officials said has become dysfunctional and set up an interim Executive Committee to manage its affairs until elections are held later in the year.

Kwesi Nyantakyi, president of Ghana Football Association, headed the seven-man Wafu Executive Committee.

The other members, which include The Gambia Football Association’s leader Seedy Kinteh, are Augustine Senghor, Senegal; Jose Lobato, Guinea Bissau; Idris Diallo, Cote D Ivoire; Theodore Sawadogo, Burkina Faso; and Hammadou Cisse, Mali.

The decision was however made after a detailed deliberation, consideration and review of the situation of football in West Africa, officials said.

Meanwhile, other important issues discussed at a press conference at the Kairaba Beach Hotel, was the review of the current political situation in Ivory Coast, the interim executive committee was mandated to consider moving the WAFU Secretariat to a country where it will be more functional.

The CAF Executive Committee is expected to discuss the review of the Zonal Unions including WAFU at its meeting on 16 May 2011.

The General Assembly will then reconvene in Zurich on 31 May 2011 to discuss the proposals of CAF for its re-organization. It was accordingly decided that the General Assembly will meet in Zurich and fix a date for the election of a substantial Executive Committee.

The Zurich meeting will also avail the West Africa Football body the opportunity to consider the financial statements of WAFU, the activity report of WAFU and the proposals for the amendment of its constitution.
