Former police CMC, 2 others charged

Three persons on Monday 1st February 2010 appeared before Principal Magistrate Emmanuel Nkea of the Banjul Magistrates' Court, charged with five counts ranging from conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor to giving false information to a public officer.

The accused persons are Pa Habibu Mbye, a Gambian and former Crime Management Coordinator of the Gambia Police Force, Idrish Massade and Charles Boniface Okeke, both Nigerian nationals.

According to the particulars of the offence, count one stated that the accused persons, sometime in 2009 in Banjul conspired and gave false information to the Honourable Minister of Fisheries and Water Resources, Antouman Saho.

The information was that one Saliba Samateh was selling cocaine in the Gambia, with the help of the security officers using the name of the President.

Count two stated that in the same year and place, the accused persons gave false information to the same Minister that one Saliba Samateh was selling cocaine in the Gambia, with the help of the security officers using the President's name.

Count three stated that in the same year and place, the accused persons gave false information to the Minister that Saliba Samateh was trafficking cocaine in the Gambia, with the help of the security officers using the President’s name.

Count four stated that in the same year and place, the accused persons gave false information to the minister that Saliba Samateh has a uniformed bodyguard at his Brusubi residence.

Count five stated that in the same year and place, the accused persons gave false information to the Minister that Saliba Samateh has a large quantity of drugs stored in Guinea Bussau.

Meanwhile, the accused persons, who all pleaded not guilty to the charges, were granted the same court bail conditions.

Hearing continues today.
