Femi Peters Calls for Unconditional Release of Kanyiba Kanyi

Femi Peters, the Campaign Manager of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has renewed the never-ending call for the release for Kanyiba Kanyi, the UDP supporter who went missing in 2006. Mr Peters made this call last Sunday when he walked into our office.

"Kanyiba Kanyi should be produced and brought to a court of law, charges of which we strongly doubt. We have waited so long to no avail and Kanyiba Kanyi is still nowhere to be found since 2006," he said.

"It is a pity that Kanyiba Kanyi has not been accorded justice in the true sense of the word. We believe in justice by merit and not victor's justice," he said, adding that the rule of law and not the rule of the jungle govern The Gambia.

"I am therefore calling upon the international community to use their good offices to secure the unconditional release of Kanyiba Kanyi," he said.

"I Femi Peters, Campaign Manager of the UDP, I am not afraid to go to Yahya Jammeh's five-star hotel at Mile II for political reasons, but will strongly detest and pray not to be there for criminal reasons.

"The United Democratic Party is a party of various sectors and we strongly believe that the rule of law should prevail regardless of party affiliation, religious belonging and what have you. It is in the interest of the party to stand up and we will continue to stand up for justice and not victor's justice.

Violation of these basic tenets is unacceptable and barely tolerable. The UDP is a party that symbolises that aspiration of the Gambian people. UDP is a symbol of strength, a symbol of courage and a symbol of justifiable defiance and symbol of justifiable existence. We owe it to ourselves and the people of this country to stand up for the truth, come what may".
