Members of the National Assembly yesterday unanimously elected Mrs Fatou Mbye as the new Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, a position that has been vacant since the election of Abdoulie Bojang as the new Speaker of the National Assembly.
Fatou Mbye, a retired teacher and education officer, was until the time of her election as deputy speaker, the Director General of the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) and Chairperson of the National Women’s Council.
Mrs Mbye was elected unopposed following her nomination by Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, majority leader and member for Serrekunda East, which was seconded by Hon. Sidia Jatta of the opposition National Alliance for Democracy and Development.
Mrs Mbye started teaching in 1972, as an unqualified teacher, and remained a teacher through 1978. She did her HTC at Milton Margai College in Sierra Leone.
During her career, Mrs Mbye served as a senior headmistress, senior education officer, principal education officer, and as Director Region 2 under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
She is also the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS).
