Father Gough Academy were on Sunday crowned champions of a twelve-team inter-academy football final sponsored by Muhammed Jah, CEO of QCell.
They beat Baggio Academy 2-1 during the opening ceremony of the Manjai Kunda Sports Complex Artificial Turf named after Biri-Biri.
The Gough Academy, winners of the competition went home with a giant trophy and players of both teams were also awarded with medals at the end of the final.
Yaya Camara, a member of the organizers of the tournament, said they organised the tournament to develop grassroots sports in the country, especially football
The tournament will be organised annually, he says, urging parents to allow their children to play football.
"Sport is like business in the world now and we will encourage children to play football but at the same time get them to be serious with their education," he concluded.
Assan Jallow of the Bijilo Layout Academy was named the best player of the tournament. The George Lobba Academy was the best team of the tournament and Sheikh Omar Faye was the leading goal scorer.
In the opening game of the senior schools category St Augustine’s Senior Secondary School beat Gambia Senior Secondary School 2-0. Badou Gassama and Alfusainey Camara scored Saints’ goals in the 4th and 29th minutes of the game.
