A
fatal road accident involving a passenger vehicle and a truck, which took place
in the early hours of Friday 4 November 2016 between Tanji and Brufut, claimed
9 lives out of 12 passengers in the van.
According
to the police public relations officer, Inspector Foday Conta, the passenger
van, with number BJL 9420 K, was coming from Tanji end heading to Brufut, while
the truck was coming from the Brufut end heading to Tanji in the early hours of
Friday (between 05:30 and 06:00hrs).
The
accident claimed nine lives on the spot, including that of the driver and the
conductor, PRO Conta said, adding that the remaining three people in the van,
sustained serious injuries and were admitted at the Edward Francis Small
Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) for medical treatment.
The
truck driver, Basiru Jallow, age 26, of Brufut is under police custody helping
them in their investigation, Conta added.
He
further stated: “The Office of the Inspector General of Police is hereby
warning all drivers and users of public highways to be extra careful in the way
they use the road, because the life you save may be your own.”
