The European Union (EU) has issued a statement expressing its concern over the recent conviction and sentencing of Femi Peters, the Campaign Manager of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

The statement was issued by the British High Commission in The Gambia on behalf of the EU Representative.

It reads: "The EU is concerned by the negative impact on Freedom of Assembly and Freedom of Expression in The Gambia after the prosecution of the Campaign Manager of the United Democratic Party, Femi Peters, who has been sentenced to one year of prison. The EU calls on The Gambia to act in conformity with its international human rights and treaty obligations in considering any appeal."
