An elderly woman recently sought court redress at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court to recover her plot of land, which she claimed she had bought from the former alkalo of Manjai Kunda, and was sold by the present alkalo.

According to the particulars of her claim, the old woman, Lena Gomez, prayed to the court for the present alkalo, Momodou Lamin Camara, to give her back her plot of land or its value which was allocated to her by the then alkalo, Karafa Camara, in 1970.

Mrs Gomez further claimed that the present alkalo succeeded as alkalo after the death of the former alkalo, and sold her plot of land to one Muhammed Sumareh, and then threatened the old woman that he would imprison her, if she ever claimed for the recovery of her compound.

The old woman also claimed that the present alkalo had destroyed her mud house which she built on the land.

Lena Gomez further claimed D45,000 damages for the demolition of her mud house building, hardship suffered during the period and the killing of her pigs.

The alkalo has denied liability.

The case was presided over by Magistrate Jobarteh, who adjourned it till 30 May 2013, for hearing.
