Driver fined for traffic offences

A driver was recently convicted and sentenced by Magistrate Babucarr Secka of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court for traffic offences.

Amadou Sanyang, who pleaded guilty of the offence charged, was convicted on count one to a fine of D1,500 in default to serve three months in prison and on count two, he was fined D1,500 in default to serve three months in prison.

He was also ordered to pay back D25,000 to Dabanan Electrical Company in default to serve six months in prison. All sentences were to run concurrently.

The facts of the case as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Inspector L. Touray, stated that the accident happened on 4 March 2011 between the hours of 11:30 to 1200 along the

He said the convict was driving a motor vehicle with the registration number BJL 6213A and as he passed a junction, he wanted to reverse back as a result, he knocked a light pole.

Inspector Touray further narrated that the convict was seen by one Mr Demba who asked the convict to report the matter to the police, which he did.

He said the matter was reported to the Old Yundum Police Station, adding that the vehicle was tested and found that the breaking system was not functioning.

He further stated that Dabanan Electrical Company, who owned the pole, sent a document to the police, indicating that the pole cost D25,000.

The convict, who admitted the facts as true and correct, begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
