Defilement Case in Court

The Bundung Magistrates' Court presided over by Amina Saho-Ceesay on 19th November 2008 heard a defilement case brought by the state against one Ernest Sanyang.

According to the charge sheet sometime in 2008 at Bundung, the accused Ernest Sanyang unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 13 years.

He denied the charge.

His defence counsel Edu Gomez applied to the court to grant his client bail as the offence allegedly committed by the accused is a bail-able one, according to the law.

In response, the prosecuting officer Inspector Jahateh told the court that bearing in mind the offence allegedly committed by the accused and for his own security the court should not give bail to the accused. He said it is the duty of the police to protect the life and property of the people and allowing the accused outside may anger the family of the victim.

The court later upheld the prosecution objection and remanded the accused in custody.

The case was adjourned until 30th November 2008.
