Providing decent housing for the officers, men and women of the Gambia armed forces serves as a remarkable incentive that would boost their morale.
The need for providing decent accommodation to soldiers by the state was long recognized.
Some of their living quarters were said to be very old and poorly maintained.
However, it seems this is becoming a thing of the past, with the rehabilitation of living quarters for soldiers residing at the Yundum Barracks.
Their barracks have been renovated as a show of the commitment of the government to attend to the welfare of our men and women in uniform, and this was implemented thanks to the intervention of the Taiwanese government.
The military’s role in safeguarding and protecting the territorial integrity of the country cannot be overemphasized; thus the need to uplift their living conditions.
Indeed, the soldiers deserve good accommodation, especially if they stay in barracks.
Those at the Yundum Barracks can now boost of repaired roofs, doors and windows, repainted houses and rewired electrical fittings in their quarters, thanks to the cordial Banjul-Taipei ties.
The renovation project cost the Taiwanese government six hundred and sixty thousand eight hundred and seven US dollars.
The structures at the barracks have been given a major facelift, thus bringing greater comfort to their occupants.
This latest development for the armed forces is a big source of motivation for the members of the force.
Therefore, we want to stress that the occupants must take full responsibility for maintaining the structures.
It is said that to whom much is given, much is also expected!
We also understand that the police force will benefit, with the renovation of the Police Lines in Banjul.
Rewarding the police in this and many other forms is also highly welcomed, and we therefore applaud the government of Taiwan for their timely intervention.
Such a move will, no doubt, foster efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery among the members of the country’s police force.
Once more, we thank the government and people of the republic of China on Taiwan for their support to upgrading the status of members of the security services in The Gambia.
