Danso’s timbers part ways with Scotland striker

Feb 4, 2013, 11:12 AM

Gambia defender Mamodou “Futty” Danso’s Major League Soccer side the Portland Timbers have released veteran Scotland striker Kris Boyd who was deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Caleb Porter after failing to impress last year.

It comes as no shock, but now it’s official: Kris Boyd is no longer a Portland Timbers player.

The former Rangers star was less than prolific in his single season in MLS, scoring just seven goals in 26 appearances, and the 29-year-old and the club agreed to mutually part on Jan. 31, goal.com has revealed.

We would like to thank Kris for his service to the club and we wish him well in his future endeavours,” said Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson on goal.com

Boyd’s days in the Rose City were numbered ever since the hiring of Caleb Porter as the club’s manager.

Kris Boyd is a player that I think will have a hard time playing in the way that we want to play,” Porter said upon taking the job last month.

And that’s no knock on Kris. He would fit in a lot of different systems but, with what I want out of my strikers, it’s going to be difficult for him to offer what I’m looking for in that position.”

The Portland Timbers will open with this season campaign on March 3rd against the New York Red Bulls. goal.com
