Child
Protection Alliance (CPA) at the weekend brought together journalists to
sensitise them about the General Comment so that they can in turn popularise it.
The
daylong gathering was held at Actionaid premises along MDI Road, Kanifing.
The
General Comment with regards to child rights includes the inclusion of children
in the government’s budget allocation to the public sector.
Kaddijatou
Jallow, child protection officer at CPA, said in other to realise the rights of
children, one needs to allocate a special budget for them, adding that children
needs to be provided with social amenities like hospitals, schools and other
protection services.
“Children
should be included in budgets not because they are entitled to but it is also
their rights,” she said.
According
to her, for children to realise their rights, they should be provided with an
enabling environment and be educated.
Mrs
Jallow said children with special need should be included in allocating
budgets; they should not be discriminated based on their religion, nationality
or gender.
