Magistrate Babucarr Secka of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Sarjo Jallow to a fine of D1, 500 in default to serve three months in prison for stealing cassava.

Sgt 1343 Camara, in narrating the facts of the case, stated that on 19 February 2011, the convict, Sarjo Jallow, was standing on the road when the Police Intervention Unit found him there in possession of a bag of cassava.

He said the convict was asked where he got the bag of the cassava but his answer was not satisfactory to the officers, adding that the convict was arrested and taken to the Banjulinding Police Station.

Sgt 1343 Camara further adduced that the complainant came to report to the station that his cassava was stolen from his farm, adding that it was shown to him at the station and he identified it.

The convict, he added, was interrogated and he confessed stealing the said cassava from the complainant’s farm in Busumbala.

He said the convict was later cautioned and charged with the offence committed.

The convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy on him, saying he was hungry and had nothing to eat.
