Jul 27, 2010, 1:42 PM

Mr. Lamin Kaba Bajo, the Minister of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters last Friday inaugurated the central mosque of Brufut in Kombo North, on behalf of President Jammeh.

Built in the early 50s, the old structure could no longer accommodate the growing demand of worshipers at the mosque. It is against this backdrop that the Village Development Committee (VDC) of Brufut spearheaded the initiative through community participation to put up another structure for a replacement.

To this end, the residents of the area in 2005 laid the foundation stone for a new structure to be constructed at the same site. Since then efforts have been mounted to set the ball rolling, thanks to President Jammeh who recently came to the aid of the residents to do the finishing job, when the community of Brufut paid a courtesy call on him at State House.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Kaba Bajo commended the residents of Brufut for their massive turnout. While underscoring the importance of religion in the life of believers, he urged all and sundry to make the best use of the opportunity available to them.

Minster Bajo implored all to pray for peace and progress in the country, as according to him, development cannot take place in the absence of peace.

He extended President Jammeh's delight for being associated with development initiatives undertaken by residents of Brufut, in particular, the construction of a mosque, which he noted, is a religious obligation.

Sheriff Kebba Hydara, a well-known religious scholar heaped praises on President Jammeh for the support he rendered to the community of Brufut. He recalled that the foundation stone for the construction of the mosque was laid on 25th March 2005, and then thanked all those who have in one way or the other contributed to the success of the project. He cited Ba-Jamba Bojang and his team and the contractor Karamo Bojang for the pivotal role they played in the success of the initiative.

Other speakers at the occasion included Ba-Jamba Bojang, who lauded President President Jammeh for the numerous development initiatives.

The ceremony was attended by thousands of worshippers who thronged the millions of Dalasi worth of mosque.
