Boost for URR traditional birth attendants

Traditional Birth Attendants at Diabugu Batapa Health Centre catchment area (TBA'S) in Sandu District of Upper River Region (URR) were beneficiaries of delivery kits and some medicaments from the Friends of Diabugu Batapa in Spain (FDBS).

Sixty TBA's from Primary Health Care (PHC) and Non-Primary Health Care (PHC) villages within Diabugu Batapa catchment area received the delivery kits, while Diabugu Health Center also received some medicaments.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Regional Health Director for Upper River Region (URR), Mr. Samba Ceesay, a nurse-in-charge of Diabugu Health Centre commended the people of Santa Coloma in Spain for providing them with important items like delivery kits.

Ms. Fatoumata Giana, a Traditional Birth Attendant from Kuraw village thanked their donors on behalf of her colleagues. According to her, the delivery kits came at a time when the old ones were badly in need of replacement. She assured the donors that the donated items would be taken care of.

For his part, The Gambia based Coordinator of the Friends of Diabugu Batapa in Spain (FDBS), Mr. Ansumana M. Drammeh stated that his association, in collaboration with the Regional Heath Team of (URR) has been providing in-service training for the TBA's within Diabugu catchment area.

According to Mr. Drammeh, his association had constructed an admission ward at Diabugu Health Centre, built teachers quarters, provided the school with a library and computer classrooms, among others. He disclosed that they are presently sponsoring over two hundred students at Diabugu Lower, Upper Basic and Senior Secondary Schools.

He stated that the women villagers were also provided with micro-credit, adding that they are now constructing a skill centre which will consist of a carpentry, electrical, mechanical, tie and die and soap-making workshops for the youth in the village of Diabugu Batapa.

For her part, Mrs. Roser Porta, Head of Friends of Diabugu Batapa in Spain (FDBS) expressed delight at the gesture and the warm welcome accorded to them by the residents. She assured them of her organisation's continuous support.

The Alkalo of Diabugu Batapa village, Alhagie Kurusa Drammeh also spoke at the gathering on behalf of the villagers of Kuraw and Diabugu Batapa.
