Banyaka Alkalo slammed with more charges in D1M fraud case

The trial involving ten men and a woman, including Sambouya Alkalo and Banyaka Alkalo, yesterday proceeded at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate O. Cham with the Banyaka alkalo facing fresh charges.

The accused persons are Ousman Touray, Ousman Bojang, Karamo Touray, Malick Camara, Edrisa Touray, Satou Silameh, Momodou Bajo, Momodou Fatty, Muhammed Lamin Jabang, Kutubo Fatty and Yankuba Jabang.

The case was adjourned for plea-taking.

When the case was called, the trial magistrate told the court the defence counsel had applied for an adjournment earlier due to an engagement.

However, the police prosecutor informed the court that there was an additional charge of neglect of official duty for Malick Camara, the Alkalo of Banyaka community.

According to the particulars of offence on the said additional charge, the accused person, Malick Camara, between 2010 and 2014 at Kunkujang Mariama and Tujereng villages in the Kombo South district of the West Coast Region, while serving as Alkalo of Banyaka, neglected his duty by failing to confirm ownership of land belonging to President Yahya Jammeh, and transferred the said plot of land to Michel Jatta, Tapha Kanyi and Pierre Njai respectively, and thereby committed an offence.

The particulars of offence in count one stated that the accused persons Ousman Touray, Ousman Bojang, Karamo Touray, Malick Camara, Edrisa Touray, Satou Silameh, Momodou Bajo, Momodou Fatty, Muhammed Lamin Jabang, Kutubo Fatty and Yankuba Jabang, between 2010 to 2014, in Tujereng, Sambuyang, Sanyang, Gunjur, Tintinto, and Mariama Kunda respectively, in Kombo South of the West Coast Region jointly conspired to commit a misdemeanor, that is, to obtain money by false pretence.

Count two stated that the accused persons with intent to defraud obtained over one million dalasis from Global Properties, by Michael Jatta and some other people on the pretext that they have land to allocate to them, knowing and believing that the said representation was false and untrue.
