Management
of Brikama Area Council (BAC), last week inaugurated a new market in Nema
Kunku.
The
twelve stalls, one open shed and four standard toilet market is constructed as
part of the council’s efforts to enhance infrastructural development in the
region. It is one of the seven priority projects under the Rural
Infrastructural Development Project (RIDP) implemented by the Gambia Agency for
the Management of Public Works (GAMWORKS) in the West Coast Region.
Funded
under the OPEC fund for International Development and with the council’s
counterpart contribution of 8, 878, 756.16 dalasi, the new market is expected
to bring ease to the people of the area.
Chief
executive officer of the council, Modou Jonga said the market is one out of the
seven priority projects under the Rural Infrastructural Development Project
which includes the ongoing construction of the Brikama Area Council office
complex, Kusamai-Bajagarr gravel goad, Brikama car park rear access road,
pavement of Brikama Police Station-Church Junction, Sukuta-Mariama Kunda tar
road and the Wellingara-Latrikunda road.
Mr
Jonga said Brikama is one of the most rapidly growing local government areas in
recent times and thanked the government and the OPEC fund for international
development for always standing by them.
Nema
Kunku Alkalo said the construction of the market is a blessing for them as it
will reduce the burden on them from traveling for distance to other markets.
Bilal
Faal, councilor of Wellingara ward said the construction of the market is in
fulfilment of the council’s promise made to the people of the area, saying they
will continue to appeal for support particularly for their roads.
Director
General of Gamworks, Ebrima Cham and project contractor Ousman Sillah said the
facility has the capacity to accommodate more than 100 sellers. “The BAC
Gamworks partnership will continue to fulfil the dreams of all,” Mr Cham said.
