The management of Brikama Area Council (BAC) on 30 June 2011 disbursed D143,000 to 83 needy students at schools in Regions 1 and 2.
The beneficiary schools included Model Senior Secondary School, Brikama and Gambia Methodist Academy, Kinderdorf Bottrop Senior Secondary School, Muslim Senior Secondary School, Gambia Senior Secondary School, Brufut Upper Basic School, and Mayork Senior Secondary School.
According to the BAC public relations officer, Modou Jonga, the disbursement was the first phase of the payment of school fees to the council’s sponsored students for the 2010/2011 academic year.
Mr Jonga noted that the payment of the fees is in line with the corporate social responsibility of his council, adding that the council will endeavour to complement the efforts of the government in making education accessible and affordable to all Gambian children.
He expressed delight at the good number of pupils that the council has sponsored over the years, saying they are currently contributing to the health and socio-economic advancement of the country.
The BAC spokesperson further urged the beneficiary students to utilize the opportunity as well as try to always excel in their academic pursuit, to become successful in life and responsible citizens of the country.
“I am urging the general public within West Coast Region to pay their rates and tax and other dues owed to the Council so as to enable the Council to deliver services to the communities,” Mr Jonga concluded.
