Assailant fined D1,000

Magistrate Babucarr Secka of the Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced one Edrisa Sanyang to a fine of D1,000 in default to serve one month in prison.

Edrisa Sanyang, who pleaded guilty of assault, causing actual bodily harm, was also ordered to compensate the complainant with D2,500 in default to serve another one month in prison.

The facts of the case as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Cadet ASP Kujabi, stated that on 10 February 2011, at Busumbala Village, the complainant, Isatou Saidy, had a problem with her father.

The complainant, in order to escape punishment from her father, ran into the convict's compound, explained Cadet ASP Kujabi

He further narrated that the convict heard a noise at his compound and he came with a cutlass to find out what was happening and ended up chopping the complainant on her head.

He added that the matter was reported at the Brikama Police Station and the complainant was referred to the Brikama Health Centre where she was treated.

The complainant, the prosecutor added, returned to the station where she gave her statement and the convict was subsequently arrested.
