African leaders would once again gather in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, next week, for yet another summit known as the 14th African Union Summit.

The theme for this summit is: Information and Communication Technologies in Africa: Challenges and Prospects for Development.

The ordinary sessions of the decision-making structures of the African Union (AU) are due to take place at the Headquarters of the African Union, and at the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC), both in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to official sources, the 19th Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) would be held from 25-26 January 2010 and the 16th Session of the Executive Council would be held between January 28 and 29 this year while from 31 January – 02 February 2010 would be the 14th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union.

The PRC would, among other things, deliberate on issues such as administrative and financial matters, implementation reports, legal and institutional matters, political matters, economic, social and cultural matters. The PRC would also consider the draft agenda of the 16th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council.

It would be recalled that the last AU Summit was held in Sirte, Libya, under the chairmanship of the Libyan leader Brother Muammuar Ghaddafi who is the current AU Chairman.  Back home in The Gambia, the AU summit was held here in June 2006, and proclaimed by many as one of the most successful summits in the history of the AU.
