“This is a huge step forward in protecting the human rights of girls and women and the British Embassy looks forward to working with The Government of The Gambia and other stakeholders in making this a reality,” the British ambassador said.
The announcement, he noted, is an opportunity to introduce new legislation to give the President’s decision a legal framework and for everyone involved in the fight against FGM “to continue their excellent work in educating those who still have doubts about eradicating this unacceptable practice”.
“The British Embassy applauds this landmark decision and will continue to keep the issue of addressing FGM as a prominent element of its work and efforts in The Gambia,” Ambassador Crorkin said.
