The alleged vehicle theft case involving Babucarr Cham and Mbye Cham continued yesterday at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

Momodou Alpha Bah testified as the third prosecution witness (PW3) and told the court that he is a police officer attached to CID Unit at Serrekunda Police Station.

He said he recognised the accused persons and on 13 September 2011, he was on duty at Dippakunda Police Post when a missing vehicle was recovered at Latrikunda German Park, which was reported to their station.

He said they took a taxi and upon arrival at the park, they were told the suspect, Babucarr Cham, had been arrested by the police at the Bundung Police Station.

CPL Bah further explained that he did liaise with the Bundung Police officers and explained to them that the same matter was reported to their station.

They however handed over the suspect to him and the vehicle was impounded at the park.

According to Bah, he informed the committee at the park to move the vehicle to Bundung Police Station for security reason.

He said the suspect, Babucarr Cham, was later confronted and he revealed that the said vehicle was given to him by one Mbye Cham, a welder man who also resides at DippaKunda for him to repair, but he could not repair it and Mbye Cham asked him to sell the said vehicle at D20,000.

PW3 further adduced that he also confronted the suspect together with Mbye Cham, who happened to be the 2nd accused person. A cautionary statement was obtained from the 1st accused, Babucarr Cham, in the presence of an independent witness, he added.

According to the charge sheet in August 2011, at Dippakunda, in the Kanifing Municipality, the accused persons, Babucarr Cham and Mbye Cham, jointly stole a motor vehicle with registration number BJL 3863G marked Ford, commercial vehicle, 14 passengers valued at D70, 000, the property of one Abdoulie Saine.
