Ajax
FC on Friday beat Bilbao FC to claim the 2016 late Modou Janneh Memorial
intermediate league title.
The
Amsterdam boys defeated Athletic boys 4-2 on penalties, after the regulation
time failed to produce a winner in a tightly contested final game played at the
Gunjur Nyamina Football Field.
Friday’s
final was the first-ever appearance of Ajax FC and Bilbao FC in the late Modou
Janneh Memorial intermediate league final.
Bilbao
FC made an astonishing start to the game and dominated the opening twenty
minutes of the game, but failed to utilize their limited goal-scoring
opportunities.
Ajax
FC, who were unable to settle in the opening twenty minutes of the game, opened
the scores through striker Ebrima Barrow from the penalty spot after striker
Lamin Saidy was brought inside the eighteen by Bilbao FC’s defender Foday
Touray aka Varane before breaking to give his side the lead.
Bilbao
FC responded back and levelled the scores through striker Yankuba Moro Janneh
aka Alexis Sanchez, after the interval to cancel Ebrima Barrow’s first half
opener from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.
This
pushed the game into a post-match penalty shootout, which ended 4-2 in favour
of Ajax FC.
As
champions, Ajax FC went home with a giant trophy and cash prize of D5,000,
whilst Bilbao FC received D4,000 as runners-up.
Bakary
Touray aka Fabou of Buckingham FC was awarded as the best player of the
tournament; Ebrima Barrow of Ajax FC was awarded as the leading goal scorer;
Foday Touray aka Varane was awarded as the best defender of the tournament.
Misira
United were awarded the most discipline club.
Musa
Dibba of Ajax FC was awarded as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
The
kickoff was taken by Dr Ahmed Gibril Jassey, witnessed by several dignitaries
including Famara Bojang, CEO of Vision Real Estate Company, Malang Jassey,
Department of Forestry and Tijan Bojang.
The
2016 late Modou Janneh Memorial intermediate league was bankrolled by Isatou
Cham Manjang, a native of Gunjur residing in the United Kingdom.
