The newly-appointed Director General of the Gambia Livestock Marketing Agency (GLMA), Bakary Dembo Badjie, who is also the chief of Foni Bondali in the West Coast Region, has stressed the need for Gambians to venture into livestock production.
He noted that if Gambians, especially young people, venture into animal husbandry it could help to stem the high price of livestock and meat.
He emphasised that the Vision 2016 agenda also calls for animal husbandry which, he added, is an important agricultural component.
The new GLMA DG, who made the call recently in an interview with The Point, advised livestock dealers and butchers to avoid overpricing their livestock and meat, saying they should sell at reasonable prices to help the needy and the poor during the holy month of Ramadan.
He thanked the Gambian leader for his intervention last year to reduce the price of meat in the country, adding that his intervention enabled ordinary Gambians to be able to buy and eat meat in the holy month.
He also seized the opportunity to call on livestock owners to settle their tax on livestock sales.
