When the case was called, the DPP appeared for the state and the accused was represented by counsel provided by the legal aid agency.
According to the charge sheet read in court, the accused, Maryama Bojang, on 3 April 2014 at Brikama Daruhairu in the West Coast Region, with malice aforethought caused the death of her seven-day-old child by smothering her, and thereby committed an offence.
When the charge was read to her she pleaded not guilty.
According to her lawyer, Maryama had spent two years behind bars without being brought to court.
She was arrested on 3 April 2014 and was only brought to court yesterday.
The case was then adjourned for 21, 22 and 23 March 2016.
