Adama Cham’s astonishing first-half strike has inspired league champions Gambia
Ports Authority to the 2016-2017 domestic division one league season
traditional curtain-raiser title.
The
ferry boys beat Brikama United 1-0 in a tightly-contested final game played at
the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Saturday, to clinch the domestic league
opener.
Gambia
Ports Authority lost to Brikama United 2-1 in the final match of the 2015-2016
season, prior to their Saturday Super Cup final clash.
Debutant
striker Alieu Jammeh could have given Brikama United the lead in the 12th
minute of the game, after gashing through Gambia Ports Authority’s defence
line, but his effort was denied by goalkeeper Christopher Allen.
Gambia
Ports Authority opened the scores through striker Adama Cham in the 45th minute
of the game, after capitalizing on Abdoulie Gomez’s blunder to fire home the
opener, which eventually proved to be the winner for the ferry boys, and also
earn them the 2016 Super Cup title at the expense of Brikama United.
Brikama United responded quickly for an
equalizer, and could have levelled the scores through debutant Alieu Jammeh in
the 86thminute of the game, but his shot was denied by the wood work.
Mid-fielder
Muhammed Kabba could have netted the second goal for Gambia Ports Authority,
but his effort went away; and thus the game ended 1-0 in favour of Gambia Ports
Authority
As
champions, Gambia Ports Authority were decorated with a giant trophy and cash
prize of D75, 000, whilst Brikama United pocketed D50, 000 as runners-up.
