The majority leader and member for Serrekunda East constituency has said that a vibrant press only helps the leadership, as it is an essential ingredient for true democracy and good governance.
Honourable Fabakary Tombong Jatta, however, said that since people want a free press, it has to go with responsibilities too, noting that this is his conviction.
The Serekunda East NAM made the comments recently at the National Assembly, while wrapping up the debate on the adjournment motion.
According to Hon. Jatta, to those people who witnessed developments in the first and second Republics, if not for hypocrisy and self-interest, they know that there are many developments in this country which cannot be quantified.
“We are not saying our government is perfect; so, for the press houses like Taranga FM, we would continue to appeal to the government to allow them to operate and, in fact, honestly and sincerely, Taranga FM has been doing good work.
Jatta said as Gambians, we must be honest to our conscience, and be able to advise correctly on issues, and together we can move the country forward.
The Serekunda East NAM then went on to complain that some people are blogging, and putting stories in the internet and other websites which are insulting the leadership of the country.
He pointed out that a patriotic citizenry respects its leadership, and works for the country to move forward.
“As Gambians, we must ensure that Gambians cherish the peace we have been enjoying and must make sure that we protect the interest of this country,” he said.
Abdoulie Bojang, the speaker of the National Assembly, also said they will appeal to the authorities to pardon the media houses, but said the Assembly does not know the crime those media houses committed, which might have plunged this country into chaos.
