458 Families Benefit From WFP Help In KMC

The Disaster Management Committee of Kanifing Municipal Council has commenced disbursing food and non-food items donated by the World Food Programme to eight affected communities, who were recently affected with floods within the municipality.

The beneficiaries are Kotu Quarry, London Corner, Bakau Farokono, New Jeshwang, Ebo town, Old Jeshwang, Abuko and Bundung.

The food items were made available to the KMC Disaster Management Committee, through the efforts of the National Disaster Management Agency under the Office of the Vice-President.

Speaking to our reporter shortly after the distribution of the items held at the KMC premises over the weekend, Mr. Musa Mendy, the Chairman of KMC Disaster Management Committee commended the Office of the Vice-President for their efforts in mobilising food and non- food items to flood victims within KMC and The Gambia.

According to him, the food items are a goodwill gesture from the United Nations World Food Programme, with the support of the National Disaster Management Agency under the Office of the Vice-President.

Mr. Mendy stated that the WFP food items would benefit 458 families in KMC, covering 3760 people, adding that as of last Saturday 174 family members had received their share out of the total 458.

The items donated by WFP included 904 bags of rice 50kg, 147 bags of beans 50kg, 621 litres gallon of oil and 47 bags of iodine salt bags 10kg.

The Country Director for WFP, Malcolm Duthie and the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency, Mr. Essa Khan, were all present at the distribution ceremony.
