Four accused persons were yesterday arraigned before Magistrate Bojang of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, obtaining money by false pretence and obtaining registration by false pretence.
They are Muhammed Kala Ceesay, Alieu Samba Leigh, Saikou (at large) and Alasana Sowe, all denied the charges and were each granted court bail of D30,000 with a Gambian surety, who must deposit an ID card and swear to an affidavit of means.
The case was adjourned till 26 September 2013, for hearing.
Count one stated that Muhammed Kala Ceesay, Alieu Samba Leigh and Saikou (who is at large), between June and July 2013, at Old Jeshwang and diverse places, in the Kanifing Municipality, jointly conspired to commit a felony to wit obtained D52,000 from Abdou Sowe and Amadou Sowe under the pretext of doubling the said amount for them, which they knew to be false.
On count two, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd accused persons jointly obtained D52,000 form the said Abdou Sowe and Amadou Sowe on the pretext that they were going to double the said money for them which they knew or believed to be false.
The particulars of offence on count three stated that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd accused jointly conspired to commit a felony to wit obtained D12,500 from one Haddy Jeng on the pretext that they would perform spiritual work for her, which they knew to be false.
On count four, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd accused jointly obtained an amount of D12,500 from the said Haddy Jeng on the pretext that they were going to do spiritual work for her which would alleviate the problems she was facing, which they knew or believed to be false.
Count five read that Alasana Sowe, the 4th accused, between 2005 and 2011, at Bundung, in the Kanifing Municipality, obtained a Gambian identification card and Gambian voter’s card, and registered himself as a Gambian, when he knew or believed that he is a Malian citizen and at the same time in possession of a Malian passport and voter’s card.
