“My promotional career started for very long time now. It started well before the coming of Africell in The Gambia,” he told The Entertainment and Life style exclusively at a local mall in Senegambia.
Mr Jange is currently working for Africell Gambia. He does several public relations work for the biggest GSM company, most especially endorsement of artistes, events management among others.
“Africell is one of the biggest GSM Company. I worked for because of my experience in music promotion, and my connection with people,” he said.
Speaking further promoter Jange said upon arrival in The Gambia during the first republic, he introduced the break-down dancing, which boosted his celebrity in the tiny West African nation.
“I was the first Gambian celebrity apart from Efambundy and the Gelewar at the time,” he stated. “So that’s why I introduced the break-down dance in The Gambia, then it was a phenomenon anywhere you go, people are talking about it. During that time everybody wanted to learn this dance to be able to dance. So that’s where my success started in the music industry.”
He continued: “At the time, I had so many people that wanted to learn the break-down dance, and I had trained so many people.”
He further stated that during that time, Sierra Leonean schools organised dancing competition and that was non-existent in The Gambia.
According to him, he introduced this dancing show in Gambia High School and added in those days there was nothing like social media.
“It was a difficult time but due to my popularity at the time, everybody was talking about this dance and we were able to promote it in a nice way,” he said.
During that time, I was supported by so many people particularly at State House and the First Lady was also a great supporter.
Later on, I went to the UK where I started bringing together artistes, organizing dancing shows. I also took so many Senegalese musicians to the UK and by then, it was only the Senegalese that you can use, he added.
Waka Jargn said he is currently working with Africell, doing a lot of promotional and marketing and also responsible for endorsement of artistes, events management and PR.
“When it comes to supporting artistes in this country, 95 percent of the Gambian artistes are supported by Africell. All this is geared toward empowering our youths because we have seen how The Gambia’s music industry was struggling,” he said.
“Africell will continue supporting artistes to promote their talents, but at the same time, they would also support our agenda, promote our products and services.”
The Africell promoter therefore called on the young promoters to look at the right opportunity to do their thing, and whatever promotion they are doing, they should know that there is a demand for it.
“They also need to go to the right places to connect with the right people to make their event a success,” Waka advised.
