National Youth Policy provides strategic framework to empower Gambian youth

The National Youth Policy of The Gambia (2019–2028) provides a strategic framework to empower Gambian youth and integrate them into national development processes.

It aligns with international frameworks such as the African Youth Charter and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The policy aims to create an enable environment for youth development, ensuring their active participation in socio-economic, cultural and political spheres.

Specific Objectives of the National Youth Policy

  1. Youth Empowerment: Enhance access to education, skills development, and employment opportunities.
  2. Health and Well-being: Promote youth-friendly healthcare services, including mental health and reproductive health.
  3. Civic Engagement: Foster active youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.
  4. Gender Equality: Address gender disparities and empower young women.
  5. 5. Entrepreneurship: Support youth-led businesses and innovation.
  6. Environmental Sustainability: Engage youth in climate action and sustainable practices.
  7. Social Protection: Provide safety nets for vulnerable youth groups.

The policies outline strategies to address challenges faced by Gambian youth, such as unemployment, limited access to quality education, and health services. It emphasizes the importance of partnerships between government, private sector and civil society to implement youth-focused programmes.

Key measures include:

  1. Establish youth development centres across the country.
  2. Provide scholarships and vocational training opportunities.
  3. Promote youth leadership and civic education.
  4. Support initiatives that address climate change and environmental conservation.

The policy envisions a future where Gambian youth are empowered to contribute meaningfully to national development and global progress.

Meanwhile, he National Youth Council – The Gambia has congratulated Mustapha Paragon Sonko who is a staff of the council on his successful completion of his Master’s Degree in International Migration and Ethnic Relations from Malmö University of Sweden with a specialization in migration and citizenship.

NYC also acknowledged with appreciation his receipt of a leadership diploma from the Swedish Institute an achievement that reflects his demonstrated competence and dedication to public service and youth development.

His thesis, titled “Examining Returnees’ Perception of Reintegration Programs: A Case Study of The Gambia,” addresses an issue of growing national importance and presents a timely and relevant contribution to public policy dialogue on migration and reintegration support systems.

NYC commended Sonko for his thoughtful engagement with this subject and the professionalism with which he conducted his research.

Sonko has served National Youth Council-The Gambia (NYC) in various capacities with a strong sense of responsibility and purpose.

His continued academic and professional development aligns with the Council’s mission to nurture capable and ethical leadership in the youth sector.
