Youth and Sports Minister Badjie hands over battle flag to GHA U-20 team

The Minister of Youths and Sport, Bakary Y Badjie, on Friday handed over the battle flag to the Gambia National Handball team at a ceremony held at Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The Zone 2 Handball championship will start today, Monday 13th May 2024 in Mauritania.

Badjie expressed appreciation to The Gambia Hand leadership for their tremendous work that they are doing over the past years.
He revealed that after receiving the budget from the handball association they decided to transfer 2 million dalasi as part of the ministry’s s contribution towards the budget.

‘‘The money would cost travelling, accommodation and feeding,’’ minister Badjie said.
Minister Badjie urged the delegation to be law abiding and be good ambassadors of the country.
He implored on the team to go there and compete.
The president of GHA, Lamin King Colley, gave a rundown history of the association since he took over last years.

"My first promise to the association is to provide them with a football field which will include not only handball," Colley stated.

According to him, the winner and the loser of the tournament use to received D5000 but when they took over, the league winners and knockout were able to receive D150, 000.

Colley revealed that there was never a knockout tournament since the inception up to last year.

"We played our league peacefully without the presence of the security, "he added.
He revealed that each player travelling to Mauritania received D15, 000, while the coach received D20, 000; assistant coach and medics received D18, 000.

Head of delegation received D25, 000.
Captain of the team, Lamin Fatty, thanked the president of GHA and the Ministry of Youths and Sports for their support, adding that this has never happened in the national team since he started representing The Gambia.

Secretary General GHA, Hafiz M. Jallow, thanked all those who contributed in making this day successful, adding that they are now working on moving from an association to a Federation as required by international bodies.
