The Gambia para-sports athletes Saikou Nyakateh and Sainey Njie were accompanied to the Wheelchair Fencing Academy by coach Muhammed L. Jammeh.
The Academy is hosted by the Nigerian Fencing Federation and endorsed by World Abilitysport and World Para Fencing as part of the continued commitment to developing wheelchair fencing across the African region through education, athlete development and coach education.
Participants are expected to arrive in Lagos, Nigeria today, Tuesday 4th August 2026.
The programme will commence shortly in Lagos, Nigeria.
The programme is set to wrap up on Friday 7th August 2026.
Highlighting on the significance of the event, organisers outlined that the number of applications demonstrate the growing enthusiasm for Para sport across the Commonwealth and throughout the African continent.
They outlined that it is particularly exciting to witness the increasing interest in wheelchair fencing, which continues to play an important role in creating opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators while contributing to the development and growth of inclusive sport.
Participants were invited through the efforts and exemplary leadership of The Gambia National Paralympics Committee (GNPC) governing board headed by President Sulayman Colley.
GNPC officials applauded the governing board for its tireless efforts in promoting and development of Para-sports in the country as well as giving chance to Gambia athletes to realize their potentials.
They emphasised that Gambia’s participation in the Lagos Wheelchair Fencing Academy will help raise The Gambian flag higher in the African continent through Para-sports activities.
