The Gambia U-20 team on Thursday returned home after clutching silver medal in the 2022 WAFU Zone A U-20 football tournament hosted in Mauritania.

Coach Abdoulie Bojang and his charges finished as runners-up in the annual sub-regional football championship after slipping to Senegal U-20 team 1-0 in a tightly contested final played at the Stade Olympique in Nouakchott, Mauritania, a fortnight ago.

The young Scorpions will now use the upcoming months to prepare themselves ready for the 2023 Africa U-20 Youth Championship to be hosted in Egypt.

The Gambia made their debut appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2007 held in Congo Braville, where they won bronze medal after thrashing Zambia 3-1 in their third and fourth-place play-offs match.

The young Scorpions made their second appearance in the Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2011 hosted in South Africa but were eliminated in the group phase of the tournament.

The Gambia made their third appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2021 held in Mauritania, where they won bronze medals following their 4-3 post-match penalty shootouts victory over Tunisia in their third and fourth place play-offs match.
