Muhammed Mendy, the head coach of Serrekunda West Zonal team has expressed confidence in winning this year’s Super ‘Nawetan’ (Zonals) tournament. He said they came to rectify their mistakes of previous editions.

Coach Mendy made these remarks after defeating arch rivals Serrekunda East 4-2 on a post-match penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time during the first semifinal game played at the Serrekunda East Mini-Stadium on Saturday.

“We are ready to face any of the sides (Bakau or Sanyang) in the final. We are ready and very confident of winning this year’s tournament by the grace of God,” said Coach Mendy.

He stated that beating Serrekunda East in the semifinal stage did not surprise him, adding that they never anticipated reaching the penalty shootouts stage.

“I am from Serrekunda East zone and I will never allow them to beat me while being a coach at Serrekunda West. We never wanted to reach the penalty shootout stage.”

“Serrekunda East is not bigger than West and they do not play better football than us.”

According to Coach Mendy, they allowed Serrekunda East to attack them during the first half because they wanted to see what they brought against them in front of their fans.

“We could not come all out on them on their ground and fans. We decided to sit back and allow them to come all out on us while we capitalised on the counter.”

Meanwhile, Serrekunda West has now defeated Serrekunda East Zonal team on three consecutive times. The first was a 2-0 quarterfinal win during the 2019 zonals tournament. Earlier this year, SK West again defeated East 2-0 during the KM preseason tournament before the latest 4-2 post-match penalty shootout win in the semifinal stage of this year’s Super Nawetan tournament.
