Senegal pound Gambia in AFCON Group C icebreaker

Senegal thrashed The Gambia 3-0 in their opening Group C match of the 2023 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations played yesterday in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

Ali Sowe could have given The Gambia the lead in the 2nd minute of the match after slashing through the Senegalese defence line but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Mendy.

Pape Gueye opened the scores for Senegal in the 4th minute of the match from a clever strike.

The Gambia responded back quickly for an equaliser but were unable to unlock Senegal’s formidable defence line thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of Senegal.

Upon resumption of the match, Senegal maintained their supremacy over The Gambia and created some goal-scoring opportunities.

Lamine Camara extended Senegal’s lead in the 53rd minute of the match from an excellent strike.

Alie Sowe could have pulled back one goal for The Gambia in the 58th minute of the match but his shot went away.

Lamine Camara netted the third goal for Senegal in the 87th minute of the match from a stunning strike to dash The Gambia’s hopes of coming back to their feet.

Substitute Muhammed Badamosi and striker Musa Barrow both came very close to scoring for The Gambia in the 77th and 80th minute of the match respectively but their efforts went away thus the match ended 3-0 in favour of Senegal.

The Gambia finished the match with ten men after midfielder Ebou Adams was sent off in the first half.

The Scorpions must beat Guinea Conakry in their second Group C fixture on Friday 19 January 2024 to maintain their dreams of reaching the round of sixteen of the 2023 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations.
