The government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports has approved a budget of D11 million for the Scorpions final Africa Cup of Nations match against Congo to be played in Morocco on Sunday.

The approval followed the submission of a budget of D21.2 million by the Gambia Football Federation for the Gambia’s last match in AFCON qualifiers. The 2024 AFCON tournament will be played in Ivory Coast from 13th January to 11th February, 2024.

According to the National Sports Council, out of the D11 million approved, D9.7 million has already been given to the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) as advanced payment.

“The advanced payment is meant to facilitate the payment of flight tickets, hotel bills, and the team’s allowances,” said the National Sports Council.

Meanwhile, The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has also contributed D7.6 million towards the amount and thus there is a budget deficit of D2.6 million that is yet to be realised.

The Scorpions of The Gambia sit second position with 9 points in Group G, while their opponent, Red Devils of Congo occupy third position with 3 points.

The West African side, The Gambia need only a draw to qualify for their second successive AFCON tournament, while the Central African Republic side, Congo must win to qualify.
