The Gambia was initially allocated with ten athlete quota places across specific sports disciplines.
GNOC second vice president Bakary K. Jammeh, who doubles as the team leader (chef de mission) for the delegation to Glasgow, noted that in distributing these places, the GNOC adopted a strategic approach guided by its long-term athlete development objectives, adding that the Commonwealth Games provide an important platform for assessing the progress and competitiveness of their athletes, particularly those benefiting from Olympic Solidarity Scholarship Programme.
Jammeh stated that wherever possible, priority was to ensure that scholarship holders are included in Team Gambia as part of their development and qualification pathway towards future international competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
He added: "Following the initial allocation, the GNOC submitted a contingency application for additional athlete places and successfully secured two additional quota slots, increasing Team Gambia's athlete delegation from 10 to 12 athletes.
"One of the additional places was allocated to judo to facilitate the participation of an Olympic Scholarship holder whose development pathway is being supported towards qualification for LA 2028.”
Jammeh noted that this approach reflects the GNOC's commitment to strategically investing in athletes with the potential to qualify for future Olympic Games, while maximising every opportunity available for athlete development and international exposure.
