German-Gambian basketball player named FIBA World Cup MVP

Dennis Schröder, a German-born to a Gambian mother was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) during Germany’s World Cup triumph over Serbia last week. The competition was organised by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Schröder, who was born on 15th September 1993 to a Gambian mother (Banjulian) and German father in Germany led the way for the victors with 28 points.

The 31-year-old with a Gambian heritage guided Germany to the FIBA World Cup triumph for the first time in history.

Germany’s undefeated run through the 2023 FIBA World Cup ended with an 83-77 victory over Serbia in the gold medal game on Sunday 10th September 2023.

Meanwhile, Dennis Schröder is a German professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He previously played for SG Braunschweig and Phantoms Braunschweig in Germany, before spending his first five seasons in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks and two years with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He is the sole owner of his German hometown team, Basketball Loewen Braunschweig of the Basketball Bundesliga, and has been the majority shareholder of the team since 2018.

According to Dennis Schröder, he started focusing on his basketball career after his father died in 2009. Dennis who can also speak the Wolof dialect noted that he and his brother were both heavily involved with skateboarding until he found basketball at a tender age.
