Competing in the 76kg category, Darboe was among the squad that represented England in the Cadet, Junior & U21 European Karate Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia few weeks ago.
Darboe's father hails from Sankandi, The Gambia. This heritage makes him a source of national pride and inspiration, particularly among young Gambians who see him as a potential role model in sports.
He began practising karate at the young age of 4. He currently trains with Sports Karate Academy 3-5 times per week, often dedicating additional weekends to national training and competitions.
With a consistent track record of achievements, including a gold medal at the 2023 National (England) Summer Championships and a silver medal at the 2023 UK Karate Championship, Darboe has garnered significant recognition both in England and The Gambia. His achievements are closely followed and celebrated by his Gambian family and community, inspiring young aspiring athletes to pursue their sporting dreams.
In a pre-tournament interview with BBC Oxford Radio alongside his 14-year-old Oxfordshire teammate, Sameer Hasib, Darboe acknowledged the invaluable support and encouragement he receives from his parents.
Bakary's father, Lamin H. Darboe and mother, Michelle Darboe expressed immense pride in their son's hard work and dedication, attributing his success to his commitment to the sport.
