Gambia wins silver in 100kg category of ECOWAS wrestling championship

Gambian wrestler, Bubacarr Mboge, won a silver medal in the just concluded 9th edition of the ECOWAS African Wrestling Championship hosted in the Senegalese Arena National, in Dakar.

Bubacarr Mboge who goes by his wrestling sobriquet as “Arobas” represented The Gambia in the 100kg category and was outstanding throughout the tournament but managed to grip the silver medal after he was defeated by Senegalese wrestler Modou Faye in the final. 

Mboge has now won two silver medals and a bronze medal in his three outings for The Gambia.

The Gambia’s team captain for the championship, Abdoukarim Keita lost to Niger opponent in the 66kg bronze medal (3rd place) playoff and dashed Gambia’s hope of a second medal of the tournament. 

The Gambian team missed out on a semifinal spot in the group category as they finished second behind group winner and eventual champions Senegal.

This year’s tournament was attended by 10 countries namely: Senegal, Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Benin, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau and The Gambia. Host Senegal finished as champions followed by Niger and Nigeria.
